Five easy actions you can take to improve lake quality
- 1. Properly maintain your septic system.
- 2. Avoid using fertilizer, particularly near the lake front.
- 3. Install a rain garden to capture and filter run-off from your downspouts.
- 4. Allow a buffer of natural grasses to grow along at least a portion of your lakefront to prevent leaves and lawn clippings from blowing into the lake.
- 5. Install low landscape cloth or mesh screening along the shore in the fall to catch leaves before they blow into the lake.
